Summerdale Peanut Co., LLC Recalls 10 Oz Bags of Baldwin County Fried Peanuts Because Of Possible Health Risk

Summerdale Peanut Co., LLC is recalling approximately 150 bags of Baldwin County Fried Peanuts packaged in 10 oz cellophane bags. These peanuts, distributed to retail establishments in Southern Alabama between June 30 and December 22, 2008, were supplied by the Peanut Corporation of America in Blakely, Georgia and have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Summerdale Peanut Co. has not received notice of any consumer illness associated with its products. However, we are taking precautionary steps by removing this product from the market. The recall was initiated when Summerdale Peanut Co., LLC was notified that Peanut Corporation of America was recalling the peanuts used in its 10 ounce fried peanuts product. Summerdale Peanut Co., LLC has ceased the distribution of this product.

This recall is limited to the particular product. Peanuts grown in Alabama that are processed at Summerdale Peanut Co, LLC are not affected.

Consumers who have purchased a 10 oz. cellophane bag labeled "Baldwin County Fried Peanuts" should not consume these peanuts. They should discard the peanuts but may take the packaging back to the location of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 251-989-2221.
