Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Co. Announces Voluntary Recall of Ice Cream Due to Possible Health Risk

Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company has initiated a recall of a peanut containing ice cream produced at our Kansas City, MO plant because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The products included in this recall are:

This ice cream is sold in retail and convenience stores in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.

There have been no reported illnesses related to our products to date.

The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) notified our supplier of a blend of nuts, that the peanuts they had received have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These peanuts have been used in the manufacture of ice cream by Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company. Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company has switched to a different peanut supplier on February 5, 2009 and any lots not listed above are not under recall. Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company uses dedicated production lines and has a long history of making safe and delicious products. We will work closely with the FDA in their on-going investigation of the potentially contaminated peanuts.

Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company is notifying our direct customers by phone and/or in writing of the recalled products that contains PCA’s peanuts. Consumers with recalled products may either discard them or return them to the store of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods at 816-231-2000.
