Nut Bar Company Recalls Candy Shoppe Double Dip Peanuts Sold At Meijer Stores In Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan And Ohio Because Of Possible Health Risk

The Nut Bar Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is recalling Nut Bar Candy Shoppe Double Dip Peanuts, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more sever illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recall is for the following lots: Nut Bar Candy Shoppe Double Dip Peanuts, UPC 7813800543; lots 8353, Sell By 8/18/09; 8364 Sell By 8/29/09; 8365 Sell By 8/30/09 and 912 Sell By 9/12/09. The product is sold in one-pound, zip lock plastic bags with the lot coding information found printed on the very bottom of the bag (near the heat seal).

Nut Bar Candy Shoppe Double Dip Peanuts was distributed in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky through Meijer, Inc. stores. No illnesses have been reported to date involving Nut Bar Candy Shoppe Double Dip Peanuts.

Nut Bar Company has initiated this voluntary recall in response to an expanded recall by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA’s expanded recall now includes all peanuts and peanut-related products from PCA’s Blakely, Georgia plant from January 2007 to present. The FDA is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella targeted at PCA’s Blakely plant.

Consumers who have purchased Nut Bar Candy Shoppe Double Dip Peanuts are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or to dispose of the product themselves.
