Earth Island Announces Voluntary Recall on Select Follow Your Heart Deli Products That Contain Peanut Butter Because of Possible Health Risk

Earth Island of Chatsworth, CA is conducting a voluntary recall on its distribution of the following Follow Your Heart pre-made deli products as a precautionary measure due to the expanded recall of Peanut Corporation of America’s Blakely, Georgia facility, which is the subject of an FDA investigation concerning the recent salmonella outbreak.

Products included in the recall are:

* Thai Peanut Tofu Wrap - 10 oz. Barcode: 049568-01034
* Thai Peanut Tofu with Rice - 10 oz. Barcode: 049568-01028
* Thai Peanut Tofu Bulk (Peanut Braised Tofu)- 1 gallon Barcode: 049568-04407
* Savory Tofu – 10 oz. Barcode: 049568-01038
* Savory Tofu – 1 gallon. Barcode: 049568-04014
* Peanut Butter Fudge Cake – 5 oz. Barcode: 049568-03012

The recalled product is packaged under the Follow Your Heart label, with lot code dates ranging from Best by: 01/27/09 to Best by: 02/09/09.

There are no reported illnesses associated with these deli products.

The recalled products contain peanut butter supplied by Peanut Corporation of America. Follow Your Heart deli products are sold at health food and grocery stores in the Southern California region.

No other Follow Your Heart products are included in the recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Earth Island takes great pride in the quality and safety of our products. Accordingly, we have destroyed any remaining supply of product received from Peanut Corporation of America and have discontinued using them as a supplier.
