Odwalla: Expired Peanut-containing Bars from 2007 Affected by Peanut Recall -- If Any Remain, Consumers Should Destroy

Odwalla, Inc. of Half Moon Bay, Calif., alerts consumers that certain expired Odwalla Chocolate Chip Peanut and Odwalla Peanut Crunch bars with “Enjoy by” dates of December, 2007, contain peanuts included within the expanded recall announced by Peanut Corporation of America (“PCA”) on January 28th and may be contaminated with Salmonella.

No Odwalla bars with “Enjoy by” dates of January 1, 2008 or later are affected.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Website at http://www.cdc.gov.

PCA has recalled all peanuts and peanut products made at its Blakely, GA, facility since January 1, 2007 because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the expired Odwalla Bars. Only Odwalla Chocolate Chip Peanut and Odwalla Peanut Crunch bars with “Enjoy by” dates of December, 2007 are affected.

The expired Odwalla bars affected include the following packages and “Enjoy by” codes:

* Odwalla Peanut Crunch Bars (2.2 ounce bars in caddies), with “Enjoy by” codes of Dec 0607C, Dec 0607D, and Dec 1407B.
* Chocolate Chip Peanut Odwalla Bars (2.2 ounce bars in caddies), with “Enjoy by” codes of Dec 0607D, Dec 0707C, Dec 1707B, Dec 1807A, and Dec 1807B.
* Chocolate Chip Peanut Odwalla Bars (2.2 ounce bars), in 6 pack cartons with “Enjoy by” codes of Dec 1307A, Dec 1307B, and Dec 2007A.

Consumers who may still have an Odwalla Chocolate Chip Peanut or Odwalla Peanut Crunch bar with these December 2007 expiration dates are requested to dispose of them in a safe manner. They were distributed in the U.S. in 2007 through retail stores. Odwalla is issuing this consumer alert out of an abundance of caution, even though it is highly unlikely any of these expired bars from 2007 -- more than 13 months past their “Enjoy by” dates -- remain in consumers’ possession.

Consumers with questions about the affected 2007 products can call the Voice of Odwalla customer service center at 1-800-639-2552. No other Odwalla products are affected.
