Rich Products Corporation announces nationwide voluntary recall of Peanut Butter Blast Pie and Red Robin 10” DD Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cake due to possible health risk
Rich Products Corporation voluntarily recalled its Peanut Butter Blast Pie and Red Robin 10” DD Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cake on January 29, 2009, because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This action is the result of the Peanut Corporation of America’s expanded recall on January 28, 2009, for all products manufactured in their Blakely, Georgia facility since January 1, 2007.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/ or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).
Rich Products Corporation has not received any reports of illness connected to either of these products and has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.
Rich’s began taking precautionary measures when the initial PCA investigation started and voluntarily placed its two potentially affected products on hold on January 19, 2009. As a result of the expanded PCA recall, Rich’s issued a voluntary recall on January 29, 2009, for the two products it manufactures that contain ingredients sourced from PCA:
* PC: 01279 Peanut Butter Blast Pie (UPC #02491620052)
* PC: 62902 Red Robin 10” DD Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cake (UPC #10049800629)
Peanut Butter Blast Pie is not packaged for retail distribution and is sold to foodservice distributors nationwide. Red Robin 10” DD Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cakes are sold to foodservice distributors nationwide who in turn sell and supply Red Robin Restaurants nationwide. Rich’s has already notified all of its distributors and customers who have received the products in question and has directed them to remove and destroy the affected products.
All lots are affected. No new product will be produced until RPC has identified, evaluated and approved a new Peanut Butter supplier.
Consumers with questions may contact the Rich’s Product Helpline at 1-800-356-7094 (United States) or 1-800-263-8174 (Canada) between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST. Voice mail is available after hours.
