George J. Howe Co. Announces Voluntary Nationwide Recall of French Burnt Peanut Products

The George J. Howe Company today announced that it is voluntarily recalling all French Burnt Peanut products distributed under its brand because of a possible health risk. The five products being recalled came from a manufacturer that used peanuts from the Peanut Corp. of America’s Blakely, Ga., facility. The Food and Drug Administration has linked this plant to a salmonella outbreak.

None of the recalled products has been found to be contaminated with salmonella and there have been no reported illnesses or consumer complaints associated with any George J. Howe product. No other Howe products are affected by or involved in this recall.

This voluntary nationwide recall of French Burnt Peanut products is being issued by the 81-year-old, family-owned company out of an abundance of caution. The following products should be returned immediately for a full refund or exchange:

These products have been sold by drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores and mass merchants, as well as online.

The Palmer Candy Company initiated the voluntary recall in response to a recall issued by Primrose Candy, a supplier of the French Burnt Peanuts and Boston Baked Beans for Palmer Candy Company. Primrose Candy has indicated that they are included in the expanded recall by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA's expanded recall now includes all peanuts and peanut-related products from PCA's Blakely, Georgia, plant from January 2007 to present. The FDA is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella targeted at PCA's Blakely plant.

Palmer Candy has not received any consumer illness complaints associated with its products. However, it is taking precautionary steps, including removing the impacted products from retail store shelves and the entire distribution system. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Consumers with additional questions may call 800-831-0828.
