Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores Recalls Roll-Up Blinds due to Risk of Strangulation

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Bamboo Roll-up blinds with valance

Units: About 1,800

Distributor: Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, of Hudson, Ohio

Hazard: Strangulation can occur when the lifting loop slides off the side of the blind and a child's neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop, or if a child places his/her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves all bamboo roll-up blinds with valances. The blinds were sold in two sizes: 36"x72" and 48"x72."

Sold exclusively at: Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores nationwide between April 2009 and December 2009. The 36"x72" blinds were sold for $25 and the 48"x72" blinds for $30.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the roll-up blinds and return the product to the nearest Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores for a full refund.

Dritz(tm) Electric Scissors Recalled by Prym Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Dritz Quick Cut(tm) Electric Scissors

Units: About 12,000

Distributor: Prym Consumer USA, of Spartanburg, S.C.

Hazard: The electric scissors can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards.

Incidents/Injuries: Prym Consumer USA has received two reports of the electric scissors igniting causing minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The electric scissors are white and blue, about 10" long and include an AC adaptor. "Dritz" is written on the handle on the blue grip.

Sold at: Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores and other craft stores nationwide from September 2009 through February 2010 for about $50.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Return the scissors to store where purchased or mail directly to Prym Consumer USA for a refund. If mailing to Prym, please include the product, your complete name, mailing address and phone number in the package and mail to Prym Consumer USA Recall Center, 950 Brisack Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.

Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores Recall SmartSpace(tm) Chairs Due to Fall Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: SmartSpace(tm) Papasan Chairs

Units: About 6,000

Importer: Jo-Ann Stores Inc., of Hudson, Ohio

Hazard: The chairs were sold without a warning label instructing consumers to lock the chair's legs before sitting. This poses a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Jo-Ann has received five reports of chairs collapsing when the legs were not locked. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the SmartSpace(tm) Papasan chair. The silver metal frame chair has a circular fabric seat that sits on a 10-inch-tall base. The fabric seat used with the papasan chairs were sold in purple, pacific, lime yellow and gray. A hangtag on the chair reads "Smartspace Papasan Chair - 1 piece."

Sold at: Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores nationwide from June 2008 through September 2008 for about $25.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the chair until a warning label, instructing consumers to engage the legs in the locked position before use, has been obtained from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores.
